NASA did a fabulous job putting the program together from 1958 on. While literally thousands of contractors did the manufacturing, the specs were so exact that it all fit together on the launch pad. There was a terrific team of scientists and engineers doing the design work. Now SpaceX is at the point where NASA was in 1959. Yes there a few things the government does so well that they shouldn't have meddled with it. I don't know what was on in Charles Bolden's head, or Obama's for that matter, except possibly dollar signs. Still I don't want to see the effort fail, even though I think they're going in the wrong direction. The US needs to be heavily involved in space rather than sucking hind tit off the Russians, Europeans and Asians

Sometimes I have the luck of the Irish, and sometimes it's even good. Two families on the next block up had their yard sales last weekend, just after I'd spent all my play money for the month already. (How'd it happen so fast?) I happened to be pedaling my trusty bike down the street just as they started carting out leftovers to the curb. One treasure was a slightly older model DVR with a 5-disc CD changer, and a little 5" analog color tv that will work fine with one of the 2 adapters I bought a couple years ago when they switched to digital. I don't turn my nose up at slightly outdated technology, especially not when it's free. They're nice people so I trust when they say both items work well.

The second family runs an upholstery business out of their home; apparently they'd just done a big job somewhere because there was a nice big box of clean foam rubber pieces and big scraps of beautiful upholstery material. Now my 5 wrought iron peacock chairs (from an auction) on the front porch look very snazzy, and they're a lot more comfortable too. I don't care about 'show'; nobody much will see them except me, since with the shade cloth nobody can tell what's on the porch. When all my landscaping fully matures, you'll hardly be able to see the bottom storey of the house from the street.

One time I happened by just as someone set out an unwanted gift at the curb, a full set of stainless steel cookware because they didn't like cooking anyway and had just switched to teflon! I took that all home too but gave most of it away because I already have enough stainless steel to run a small restaurant, and it never wears out like (yecchhhh) teflon.

Odds are the weather's cooperating for the wedding -probably quite a few going on today.

But since the whole world's about me anyway, I decided to have fun as well. Our afternoons are climbing into the 80's lately but the mornings so far have been cool and breezy. Even though one of my poor dogs stayed wakeful all night and I didn't get much sleep, I went out at 8:30 a.m. and completely did my 15'x15' backyard raised rose/strawberry garden. Took me over 2 hours, but I staggered back in crowing with glee because I could still do it. Time will come before too many years when I can't, so I enjoy it now.

I raise everything organic, y'know. Even the rose petals and hips are edible. About 3 years ago I started that garden with 7 tiny bushes which reach at least 6 feet apiece now, and they love all the leaf mulch I kept dumping in there. Pretty soon I threw in some everbearing strawberries to fight it out with the creeping charlie.

I know it sounds mad, but my system works. The strawberries are a match for the charlie, and I only need to pull the latter about twice a year. It comes up easily when you thoroughly soak the ground the night before. I started yesterday when I walked by and saw a lot of ripe berries waving at me in plain sight. Probably gobbled a dozen or more; certainly never made it back in the house with any.

Then today I ate at least a dozen again before getting a grip and picking a huge bunch to bring in. You wouldn't believe how many strawberry babies are waiting to grow a few more weeks. The roses always bloom well before berry season starts, so I severely prune them just before the first picking and weeding to keep from getting stabbed to death. It's more than enough work for one old lady. But life is still good.

Psychology, Monkeys, and Congress

This was sent to me as a joke but it has such a strong measure of truth I put it here.

If you start with a cage containing five monkeys and inside the cage, hang a banana on a string from the top and then you place a set of stairs under the banana, before long a monkey will go to the stairs and climb toward the banana.
As soon as he touches the stairs, you spray all the other monkeys with cold water.
After a while another monkey makes an attempt with same result ... all the other monkeys are sprayed with cold water. Pretty soon when another monkey tries to climb the stairs, the other monkeys will try to prevent it.
Now, put the cold water away.
Remove one monkey from the cage and replace it with a new one.
The new monkey sees the banana and attempts to climb the stairs. To his shock, all of the other monkeys beat the crap out of him. After another attempt and attack, he knows that if he tries to climb the stairs he will be assaulted.
Next, remove another of the original five monkeys, replacing it with a new one.
The newcomer goes to the stairs and is attacked. The previous newcomer takes part in the punishment...... with enthusiasm.
Then, replace a third original monkey with a new one, followed by the fourth, then the fifth. Every time the newest monkey takes to the stairs he is attacked.
Now, the monkeys that are beating him up have no idea why they were not permitted to climb the stairs.
Neither do they know why they are participating in the beating of the newest monkey.
Finally, having replaced all of the original monkeys, none of the remaining monkeys will have ever been sprayed with cold water.
Nevertheless, not one of the monkeys will try to climb the stairway for the banana.
Why, you ask? Because in their minds...that is the way it has always been!
This, my friends, is how Congress operates... and this is why, from time to time:
ALL of the monkeys need to be REPLACED AT THE SAME TIME.

Yes, I have looked at the Volt. The dealer where we bought our car, WK Chevrolet, in Sedalia, MO., has one, and we looked at it a couple of weeks ago. It gets infinite gas mileage while on the battery...which will take it between 25 to 50 miles, before the gas engine kicks in. Once running with the gas engine, it averages slightly over 30MPG. The gas engine actually does hook up to the drive train so as to give the car highway speeds of up to 100mph. It's a neat concept, and I'm sure that this technology will eventually catch on....but WK has had this thing sitting on the lot for over 2 months, and so far no takers. The salesman did offer us a pretty good deal, and with the federal tax credit of $7500, it was tempting, and we are still thinking about it.

When I talked to the Col I told him that I was the crew chief in charge of that truck and felt that I was justified in using it. He asked what I would do if one of my people needed it. I told him that I would drive the truck and help my troop with the move! Next I saw of that was a five day forfeiture of pay, suspended for five days! I had no problem behaving for those 5 days as you can imagine, and I made enough copies to distribute to the LT, NCOIC, and his newly promoted E6 buddy, the group I called the drunk coalition.
